In Touch with Charles Stanley — October 8, 2026

October 08, 2026

In this session, Dr. Charles Stanley challenges the common idea that preaching is a skill honed by study and eloquence. He argues that true preaching is a work of the Holy Spirit, and that pastors must be vessels through whom God speaks, not the sole authors of the message.

Is the Preacher a Mouthpiece or a Messenger?

Stanley opens by reminding listeners that the call to preach is a call to deliver God’s truth, not to impress an audience. He cites 1 Corinthians 15, where Paul says he came “not with superiority of speech or wisdom” but “with the demonstration of the Spirit and power.” The point is that the preacher’s voice is shaped by the Spirit, not by human skill.

What Happens When a Preacher Lets the World Decide?

He warns that many pastors fall into what he calls a “satanic deception”: allowing busy schedules, social obligations, or the desire to please others to pull them away from the one thing God has called them to—preaching the gospel. When a preacher compromises the gospel truth, the anointing that God places on their lips fades, and the message loses its power.

Why Must the Cross Stay Center Stage?

Drawing on 1 Corinthians 2, Stanley stresses that every sermon should revolve around the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. He challenges pastors to ask whether their messages invite listeners to receive Christ for forgiveness, to be born again, and to have their names written in the Lamb’s book of life. Without this focus, the sermon risks becoming a mere lecture rather than a call to salvation.

How Can a Pastor Show the Spirit’s Power?

Stanley emphasizes that a clean, Spirit‑filled life is essential. He says that a preacher who relies on eloquence, intellect, or experience is “standing in the pulpit as a helpless man.” Instead, the pastor should live out the power of God so that congregants can see the Spirit at work. This demonstration of power, he says, is what moves hearts and brings people to faith.
