What Does It Mean to Stand in the Gap?

In a recent episode of In Touch, Dr. Charles Stanley turns his attention to the often‑overlooked ministry of intercession. He invites listeners to move beyond a brief, “pray for a minute” moment and to consider what it truly means to stand in the gap for others.

The Call to Intercede

Dr. Stanley reminds us that intercession is a privilege and a responsibility. He stresses that believers are called to lift up the needs of those around them—whether they are friends, family, or strangers—before God, and that this calling is not optional but a part of the Christian life.

The Heart of Intercession

He identifies three core attitudes that shape effective intercession:

  • Awareness – A sensitivity to the hurts, hopes, and hidden struggles of the person you pray for, sharpened by the Holy Spirit over time.
  • Abandonment – A willingness to set aside self‑interest and to bring the other’s burdens before God for His glory, not for personal gain.
  • Agonizing – A deep, sometimes painful empathy that can lead an intercessor to weep for the one they are praying for, mirroring the compassion Jesus showed.

Equipping the Intercessor

To support these attitudes, Dr. Stanley draws on Scripture. He cites Ephesians 6, explaining that the “full armor of God” is not only for spiritual warfare but also for the posture of prayer. He also references Jesus’ weeping over Jerusalem as an example of a God‑centered heart that is ready to intercede. Finally, he reminds listeners that intercessors are accountable to God for the prayers they lift, and that this accountability shapes the faithfulness of their ministry.

Why It Matters

Dr. Stanley encourages listeners to move beyond brief, casual prayers and to engage in sustained, God‑centered intercession. By cultivating awareness, abandonment, and agonizing, and by equipping themselves with spiritual armor and accountability, believers can stand in the gap for others in a way that honors God and impacts lives.

For a deeper exploration of these ideas, listeners are invited to hear the full audio of the episode.
