Genesis 3:15 and the First Promise

Dr. Fesco opens by returning to the very first hint of a future Redeemer in Genesis 3:15. He asks listeners to consider how a brief promise spoken to Adam and Eve after the fall can become the foundation for an entire theological system. The question he poses is whether this “seed of the woman” is merely a prophetic image or the first glimpse of a covenant that will unfold throughout Scripture.

From Works to Grace: How God’s Covenant Shifted

In the next section, the speaker contrasts the covenant of works—where Adam’s obedience could secure eternal life—with the covenant of grace, in which salvation is offered “by grace alone through faith alone.” He highlights the tension between God’s command to be fruitful in Genesis 1 and the promise that God Himself will make Abraham fruitful in Genesis 17. The central question becomes: how does God transform a command into a promise, and what does that reveal about the nature of His covenantal relationship with humanity?

Covenants as Glimpses of the Grace to Come

Dr. Fesco traces the covenant of grace through the Noahic, Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, and New Covenants. He points to passages such as Hebrews 11:7, where Noah’s faith is highlighted, and Galatians 3:19, where the Mosaic covenant is described as a guardian until the seed would come. The speaker invites listeners to ask whether the law and the promise are two sides of the same divine plan, and how each covenant foreshadows the ultimate fulfillment in Christ.

Jesus, the Last Adam, and the Fulfillment of the Promise

In the final section, Dr. Fesco turns to 1 Corinthians 15:45, where Paul calls Jesus the “last Adam.” He explores how Jesus both fulfills what Adam was meant to do and pays the penalty for the broken covenant of works. The tension he presents is whether the grace offered through Christ is a new covenant or the culmination of the promises made to Adam and the seed of the woman. He encourages listeners to consider how faith in Christ allows participation in the covenant of grace that began in Genesis.
