Jesus’ Warning About Covetousness

Before the parable, Jesus confronts a young man who asks Him to decide how an inheritance should be divided. Jesus rebukes the request, saying, “Man, who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” He then warns the crowd: “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” This brief exchange sets the tone for the lesson that follows.

The Parable of the Rich Fool

Jesus tells the story of a farmer who, after a bountiful harvest, plans to tear down his barns and build larger ones to store all his goods. He thinks, “I will be at ease, eat, drink, and be merry.” God’s reply is sharp: “Fool! Tonight your soul is required of you.” The parable raises questions about how we view wealth and what it means to be truly rich toward God.

Being Rich Toward God

The speaker notes that the rich man’s focus was on his possessions, not on God. He never considers giving back—tithing or supporting others—despite the Old Testament law that calls for giving the first fruits. The parable invites listeners to examine whether their own hearts are tied to material goods or to God’s provision.
