What Is Justification by Faith Alone?

Dr. Michael Reif opens the discussion by asking what it means for God to declare a person righteous. He explains that the Reformation’s core teaching is that this declaration is not earned by works but given through faith.

Augustine’s View of Internal Transformation

Reif traces the early idea back to Augustine, who saw justification as a gradual, inner change. Augustine taught that God pours love into the heart, making believers “more and more righteous.” This view left many uncertain about whether they had earned God’s favor.

Luther’s Legal Declaration of Righteousness

Reif then describes Luther’s breakthrough. Confronted with Romans 1:17, Luther struggled with the phrase “the righteousness of God.” He realized that righteousness was not something humans could earn but something God declares to be true of believers. This legal perspective shifted the focus from internal change to God’s judgment.

The Song of Songs Analogy

To illustrate the exchange, Reif points to Luther’s use of the Song of Songs. Luther pictured the gospel as a marriage: the king (Jesus) offers his righteousness to the poor girl (the believer), who in turn gives her life to him. The king’s declaration, “All that I am I give to you,” shows that justification is a transfer of status, not merely forgiveness.

Romans 4 and the Idea of Righteousness by Faith

Reif highlights Romans 4 as the scriptural backbone for this view. The passage contrasts those who work with those who believe, stating that faith is counted as righteousness. He explains that this legal language underpins the assurance believers can have: we are declared righteous because God declares us so, not because we are.

Why This Doctrine Matters for Christian Life

Reif concludes by tying the doctrine back to everyday faith. He argues that without the assurance of being justified by faith alone, Christians cannot fully love God or live with integrity. The legal declaration of righteousness provides a “security” that allows believers to approach God honestly and boldly.
