What Is the Sign of a Rebuilt Temple?

In a series on the signs of Christ’s return, Dr. Erwin Lutzer turns to the idea that a new temple in Jerusalem will be a key event in the end times. He frames the topic as a question: what would a third temple mean for the unfolding of Scripture?

The Three Temples of Jerusalem

Dr. Lutzer traces the layers of the city’s sacred architecture. Solomon’s original temple was destroyed, a smaller structure was later built on the same spot, and then Herod the Great added a monumental expansion that still stands today as the “second temple.” He points out that the stones of Herod’s work, visible along the Western Wall, were the very walls Jesus spoke of in his warnings.

Jesus’ Warning and the End‑Times Temple

In Matthew 24, Jesus tells his disciples that no stone will be left upon another in the temple area. He then predicts the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD, a vision that echoes the prophetic language of 2 Thessalonians 2:3, where a “man of lawlessness” is described as taking his seat in the temple of God. Revelation 11 adds another layer, describing a measuring rod used to assess the temple and its altar, a symbolic act that points to a future rebuilding.

Can a Third Temple Be Built Today?

Dr. Lutzer outlines the practical barriers that would need to be overcome. The presence of the Dome of the Rock and the Al‑Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount, the political volatility of the region, and the lack of a clear construction path all present formidable obstacles. He also discusses the Temple Mount Faithful, a group that is preparing ritual items and searching for the ashes of a red heifer—an element required for priestly purification in the Old Testament. While he does not claim a definitive outcome, he highlights several speculative scenarios: a peace agreement that allows a new temple, an earthquake that might alter the status quo, or a powerful world leader who could influence the situation.

Why the Question Matters

For believers, the possibility of a third temple is more than a historical curiosity; it is tied to the timing of Christ’s return and the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. Dr. Lutzer encourages listeners to keep the prophetic picture in mind as they pursue their own spiritual race, inviting them to explore the deeper implications in the full audio.
