Why Shepherds First?

Dr. Lutzer wonders why the first recipients of the angelic message were shepherds, people who lived on the margins of society. He points to the shepherds’ role as caretakers of the sacrificial flocks that would later be replaced by the Lamb of God, and to the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.

The Angel’s Arrival and Identity

In Luke 2:9 the “angel of the Lord” appears before the shepherds, surrounded by the glory of God. Lutzer notes that the text does not name the angel, but many associate the messenger with Gabriel, who also appeared to Mary. He emphasizes the contrast between the shepherds’ fear and the angel’s calm voice.

“Do not be afraid. Behold, I bring you good news of great joy, which shall be to all people. For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

The Choir of Heaven

After the angel’s proclamation, a multitude of the heavenly host joins in praise, singing the familiar words “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased.” Lutzer suggests that this chorus shows heaven’s attention to earthly events and hints at the fulfillment of God’s promise.

Through these reflections, Lutzer invites listeners to explore how the angels’ celebration points to the inclusive nature of the gospel.
