What Paul Said About Slavery

In his letters to the early church, Paul addressed both masters and slaves. He warned that rebellion would “discredit the name and glory of God” and urged slaves to honor their masters while keeping their allegiance to Christ above all.

Paul’s Life as a Model

Paul’s own hardships—labor, sleepless nights, hunger—are described in 2 Corinthians 11. He says he “labored, toiled, went without sleep” yet kept his focus on praising God. His example shows that even in bondage, a Christian can find purpose in serving God.

How the Teaching Applies Today

Alistair Begg draws parallels between Paul’s context and modern workplaces. He asks listeners to treat difficult bosses with respect, to work with excellence, and to pray for wisdom when faced with unfair demands. The goal is not passive submission but intentional, God‑centered conduct in every job.

Key Questions for the Listener

  • What does it mean to “make himself a slave to everyone” in a contemporary setting?
  • How can a Christian balance respect for a manager with the conviction that Christ is the ultimate master?
  • In what ways can praise for God transform a challenging work situation?

For a deeper look at Paul’s teachings and how they shape Christian work ethics, listen to the full episode of Truth For Life with Alistair Begg.
