Why Paul Pauses to Praise in 1 Timothy 6

Alistair Begg begins the episode by highlighting two brief doxologies in 1 Timothy 6. In verse 17 Paul pauses to honor the “king eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God,” and he repeats the same praise in verse 14 as he closes the letter. These interjections are not decorative; they point to the core of Paul’s message: before he gives instruction, he first directs the reader’s attention to the nature of the One who is being taught about.

What the Doxology Reveals About God

The words “king eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God” are more than poetic language. They identify God as the sovereign ruler who is beyond time, unchanging, and unseen, yet present in the believer’s life. Begg explains that recognizing these attributes shifts how Scripture is approached—seeing it as a conversation with a living, sovereign God rather than a set of abstract rules.

Seeing God’s Power in the Waters

To illustrate God’s power, Begg turns to Isaiah 40:12, where the prophet marvels that God “measures the waters in the hollow of his hand.” He invites listeners to imagine a hand cupped in their palm and to picture the vastness of the oceans that the verse claims God can hold. This image moves the listener from a mundane view of power to a divine, immeasurable one, and it underscores how God’s might underlies every aspect of creation.

Bringing the Divine into Everyday Life

Throughout the discussion, Begg stresses that God’s nature is not confined to Scripture or the church. He challenges listeners to bring awareness of God’s power, immortality, and invisibility into everyday settings—laundry, cooking, work, family meals—so that faith becomes a lived reality rather than a distant concept.
