What Makes a Baptism Valid?

When a listener asked whether a bathtub baptism could be considered valid, Todd Friel turned to the Bible for guidance. He emphasized that the essential requirement is the use of the Trinitarian formula—"in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." The setting or the person performing the act is not the decisive factor.

Does the Setting Matter?

Friel noted that the New Testament records baptisms in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water, but it does not single out a church or a particular location as necessary. He explained that immersion is the mode prescribed in Scripture, yet the place—whether a church, a river, or a bathtub—does not invalidate the act.

Who Can Baptize?

While a pastor is often the ideal choice, the speaker clarified that Scripture does not mandate a specific person or institution. The key is that the baptizer is motivated by a genuine desire to follow Christ’s example, not by a sinful motive. Todd stressed that a parent or step‑dad can baptize without compromising validity, provided the intent is pure.

When Should You Be Baptized?

Friel encouraged believers who have already been “born again” to seek baptism promptly. He warned against unnecessary delays, noting that hesitation often stems from fear of public testimony or cultural expectations. The focus, he said, is on obedience rather than performance, and that the first command of a new believer is to be baptized as soon as possible.
